What is the correct length for a buttonhole?

To determine the correct size of a buttonhole for shank buttons:  Wrap a tape measure (or a strip of paper) around the entire head of the button (not the shank).  Pinch the tape (or strip) and make a crease where the tape meets. Fold the tape in half to determine the cut size of the buttonhole opening.  Don’t forget to add the length of the bar tacks at each end.
